Authorities in southern California said the strong smell of marijuana helped them discover $45 million worth of drugs in the back of a tractor-trailer they had pulled over for a traffic violation.

Deputies stopped the truck Wednesday morning, then opened the trailer after finding problems with the paperwork for the load, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

An “overwhelming odor” led investigators to about 20 tons of narcotics stashed in pallets in the back of the truck, including about 38,000 pounds of marijuana, 2,700 pounds of cocaine and 67 pounds of methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Sheriff Rod Hoops said Friday night the seizure was one of the largest in the county’s history. The truck’s driver, Fernando Luevano, 32, was arrested and charged with possession, transportation and sale of narcotics, authorities said.

Fox News anchor Jane Skinner is leaving the network after 12 years, she announced on-air Thursday.

The co-anchor of Fox News’ 11AM-1PM show, “Happening Now” — who is married to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell — told viewers that Thursday would be her final day on-air at the network and that she is taking a break from the news business.

“This is my last day on the air at Fox,” she said. “It’s been a thrill to have been a part of the incredible success of this place over the past 12 years that I’ve been here. My life in the 12 years I have been here has changed significantly in wonderful ways and they’ve created a lot of new responsibilities. I added a husband who has in the last couple of years become the NFL commissioner, and has a job even busier than mine. I have twin daughters, so to do justice to this new life I’ve decided to take a break from the business.”

Skinner joined Fox News as a general assignment reporter in 1998.

An earthquake in Rochester, NY was surprising news for New York City dwellers. Rochester, NY is close enough to NYC that residents travel for a variety of fun-filled festivals. Who would have ever imagined an earthquake in Rochester, NY with a Buffalo earthquake, too? The NYC people who felt a tremor today are believers.

The Toronto earthquake shook its way through Western New York and southern Ontario. The 5.0 magnitude earthquake was felt hundreds of miles around in every direction. The earth literally moved under the feet of New Yorkers!

WNED reports Rich Briggs, a research geologist at the United States Geological Survey in Colorado, stated, “There was an earthquake up in the Western Quebec seismic zone which runs in a band right along the border just north of Ottawa and it looks like it was widely felt. The shaking seems to have affected a pretty broad area.”

Areas shaken by the quake include Boston, Detroit, Baltimore, Buffalo, Rochester and New York City. YNN News Rochester reported the earthquake in Canada shocks were also felt at the Ontario-Quebec border.

USA Today reported the United States Geological Survey indicated east of the Rockies, “an earthquake can be felt over an area as much as 10 times larger than a similar magnitude earthquake on the West Coast.”

New York (CNN) — Not everyone expects a response when they write a letter to the president of the United States. But Caroline Jamieson got much more than she expected when her husband ended up in jail and afraid he would be deported.

Jamieson, vice president of marketing at a new-media advertising company, wrote President Barack Obama in January because her husband, Hervé Fonkou Takoulo, was facing deportation to his native Cameroon. Takoulo failed in a bid before political asylum almost a decade ago, and a judge issued a deportation order after they were married.

After he and Jamieson married on 2005, Takoulo applied for a green card based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen. But immigration law requires that the deportation order be lifted before the couple can appear before immigration officials to argue their case that the marriage is legitimate and not a ploy to legalize Takoulo’s presence in the United States.

Laurie David told the Huffington Post on Tuesday that a tabloid report that she is having an affair with Al Gore is an absolute lie.

“The story is completely untrue,” David told Huffington Post. “It’s a total fabrication. I adore both Al and Tipper. I look at them both as family. And I have happily been in a serious relationship since my divorce.”

Laurie and Larry David split in 2007.

Meanwhile a source close to the Gore family told Huffington Post, “Al and Tipper are still very close and spending together time this summer with their family.”

Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) has apologized for his combative behavior over the weekend in a statement released by his office:

“I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved,” Etheridge said. “Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina, I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse.”

Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) appeared unreceptive to the question of an anonymous reporter this weekend, when he grabbed the self-identified “student” after he asked the congressman if he “fully supported the Obama agenda.”

In the video, the North Carolina lawmaker is seen approaching the camera, while the reporter asks, “Hi, Congressman. How are you? Do you fully support the Obama agenda?”

Etheridge appears visibly irritated and immediately asks, “who are you?” before knocking the interviewer’s camera to the ground.

I guess he supports the agenda?

Abby Sunderland, the Thousand Oaks teenager who is sailing around the world, set off her emergency locater beacons this morning in the southern Indian Ocean. Her latest blog post, on Wednesday, was titled A Rough Few Days. Pete Thomas posts at his blog:

“Sunderland, who had been attempting to sail around the world alone, endured multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds Thursday before conditions briefly abated.

However, her parents lost satellite phone contact early this morning and an hour later were notified by the Australian Coast Guard that both of Sunderland’s EPIRB satellite devices had been activated.

One is apparently is attached to a survival suit or a life raft and meant to be used when a person is in the water or aboard a life raft.

Abby’s father struggled with emotions and said he didn’t know if his daughter was in a life raft or aboard the boat, or whether the boat was upside down.”

Al and Tipper Gore are ending their marriage. They say they lead separate lives and the mutual decision was reached after long consideration. Forty years of marriage is still quite an accomplishment, especially so in this insane world. Still, you know their kids are heartbroken:

“This is very much a mutual and mutually supportive decision that we have made together following a process of long and careful consideration,” the couple said in an e-mail obtained by Politico. “We ask for respect for our privacy and that of our family, and we do not intend to comment further.”

The news is being greeted with shock in Washington, D.C. Few political couples seemed as close as the Gores back during his vice presidential years, 1993 to 2001.

The son of legendary TV newsman Ted Koppel was found dead in a Washington Heights apartment under mysterious circumstances Monday morning after a daylong drinking binge with a man he had just met in a Midtown bar, law-enforcement sources told the New York Post.

Andrew Koppel, 40, of Rockaway Park, Queens, was declared dead at around 1:30 a.m. after paramedics were called to the rundown apartment in what a law-enforcement source called a “s- – - building” on 180th Street at Audubon Avenue, where he had been found unconscious and not breathing in a bedroom, the sources said.

Koppel — who was an attorney for the city Housing Authority — was a slobbering mess when he was brought to the apartment at around 11 p.m. by Russell Wimberly, a 32-year-old waiter he had met at a Hell’s Kitchen bar nearly 12 hours earlier.

Koppel “was just really messed up when he came in. He was very drunk,” said Belinda Caban, 53, who lives at the apartment.

Caban, who called Wimberly a drinking buddy, told The Post: “I didn’t understand anything [Koppel] said. We took him to the bedroom and laid him down to rest.”

After a couple of hours, she and Wimberly discovered he had urinated and defecated in the bed and appeared not to be breathing. They called 911.

The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club got a new member today, on Memorial Day. The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club, or SAMC, named Sergeant Holly Burke as an official member of the SAMC today.

Sergeant Holly Burke, of Columbus, is a noncommissioned officer in The United States Army, who has served three tours in Iraq. She returned from her most recent tour on May 22nd.

The Sergeant Audie Murphy Club is an organization that honors noncommissioned officers, or NCO’s whose leadership qualities mirror those of Sergeant Audie Murhpy. Audie Murphy is the most decorated soldier in American history, according to the Columbus Telegram.

“Being named to the SAMC means everything to me,” Burke said. “I studied for this for a year and had no expectation of getting it on my first try. It’s all very surreal to me. But having accomplished this shows me that I actually am good at something.”
