Ghana Eliminates US For 2nd Straight World Cup
by Dank Kush on Jun.26, 2010, under Sports

RUSTENBURG, South Africa (AP)—Life on the edge came to an exhausting and crushing end for the United States against a familiar foe.
Ghana sent the U.S. packing from the World Cup—again—eliminating the Americans in the second round Saturday night.
Asamoah Gyan scored 3 minutes into overtime, leading the Black Stars to a 2-1 victory that ended a thrilling but ultimately unfulling World Cup for the United States that was watched by record audiences back home.
“A stinging, tough defeat,” U.S. coach Bob Bradley said. “We knew Ghana was a good team and we didn’t get the job done.”
Asamoah Gyan scored 3 minutes into overtime to win it.
Kevin Prince Boateng put Ghana ahead when he stripped the ball from Ricardo Clark in the 5th minute and beat goalkeeper Tim Howard from 16 yards.
Once again, the U.S. came back, and Landon Donovan tied the score with a penalty kick in the 62nd minute after Jonathan Mensah pulled down Clint Dempsey streaking in. But no matter how much the Americans pressured after Gyan scored, they couldn’t tie it again.

Chad Jones Var Accident
by Dank Kush on Jun.25, 2010, under Sports

Chad Jones, a two-sport star at LSU who was drafted by the New York Giants, underwent surgery for a broken left leg and ankle Friday following a dawn wreck in which his SUV smashed into a pole.
Jones was admitted to the LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans in guarded condition. His agent, Rocky Arceneaux, disclosed the injuries to The Associated Press but could not be more specific about their severity until operation was over and he heard from the doctors. Arceneaux said the 21-year-old player was alert when taken to the hospital.
It was not clear what caused Jones to lose control of his vehicle at about 6 a.m. on a six-lane thoroughfare with a streetcar line on the west side of the city, police spokeswoman Shereese Harper said.
Jones was extracted from the SUV, but the two other men riding with him were fine, Harper said. She said it was too early in the investigation to know if Jones was speeding, and police will run toxicology reports to see if alcohol was a factor.
Arceneaux said he spoke to the passengers, who said Jones was in the far left lane and turned the wheel abruptly to get his tires off the streetcar tracks grooves. The vehicle then rolled into a pole that carries an overhead electrical wire powering the streetcar line.

Koman Coulibaly USA VS Slovenia World Cup Referee
by Dank Kush on Jun.18, 2010, under Sports

Koman Coulibaly, refereeing his first World Cup match, called ‘foul’ on Maurice Edu in a critical moment of USA vs. Slovenia, which would have given the Americans a 3-2 lead.
Coulibaly, a Mali resident, has been refereeing since 1993. He has called several Africa Cup matches including the 2010 final, but never before a World Cup match until today.
Many analysts and fans around the world united in disbelief that the goal was called back. While the reason for the callback was unclear, most assumed the ruling was offsides.
SI senior writer Grant Wahl noted that the official FIFA ruling was not offsides, but a foul on Edu.
Said @chamberpost on Twitter: “Prediction: Referee Koman Coulibaly’s first World Cup game will be his last.”

UFC 115 Results Chuck Liddell VS Rich Franklin
by Dank Kush on Jun.13, 2010, under Sports
Chuck Liddell put on his best performance in several years, but still ended up flat on his back under medical attention. Rich Franklin survived a lot of hard shots from Chuck Liddell to drop him with a short straight right hand.
Liddell snapped Franklin’s left arm with a high kick but Franklin stayed in the game.
It was a great performance from both champions but was still bitter sweet to see Liddell dropped and lost at the end of the fight.
Two former UFC champions met in the headliner of UFC 115. Former 185lb champ Rich Franklin faced former light heavyweight champ and Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell. Both men came out kicking, with Liddell getting the advantage. Franklin shot in and got stuffed. Liddell went to the head with a kick and another to the body. Franklin went to the inside of Chuck’s thigh.
Franklin landed a hard left hook. Then they had a hard exchange and Liddell shot in and took Franklin down. Chuck worked for a front choke when they butted heads and cut Liddell. Back to center cage, Franklin fired to the body. Landed another combo on Chuck. Then Liddell staggered Franklin with a big right. But Franklin scored his own hurt shot with a left when Liddell came in to follow up. Liddell landed some more hard shots, but had to be wary of Franklin’s power. Chuck scored with some hard shots but suddenly Rich Franklin KNOCKED HIM OUT.

A normally routine traffic citation Monday night wasn’t so routine for Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli. The suspended Ducks’ star was stopped for exiting a driveway without stopping, and was found to be in possession of “one ounce or less” of marijuana”.
The University of Oregon athletic department wasted no time in permanently dismissing one of its greatest players from the team.

Joey Logano And Kevin Harvick Postrace TV Comments
by Dank Kush on Jun.07, 2010, under Sports

Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano had an on-track incident that left Logano livid following the Pocono race. Here’s what each had to say to TV reporters afterward.
Joey Logano (to TNT’s Ralph Sheheen):
“It’s disappointing. We had a top-five run going. … For us, that was going to be awesome and I was pretty pumped up about it.
“Racing the 29, and he let me go in the middle of the straightaway and decided to dump me in the next turn. I don’t know what his deal is with me.
“It’s probably not his fault. His wife wears the firesuit in the family and tells him what to do, so it’s probably not his fault.
“It is what it is. It’s just ridiculous. I don’t know what I’ve ever done to piss him off, but he is apparently stupid.
“He needs to know how I feel, and nobody lets me go up and talk to the guy. You get out of the car, you want to talk to the guy and see what’s going on. And there’s 6,000 crew members around him that you can’t go up and talk to him.
“I don’t know how you’re supposed to settle something when you can’t even talk to the guy. But there’s no talking to him anyway.”
Kevin Harvick (to Speed’s Bob Dillner):
“That’s just racing. I got in there and thought I held a straight line, and he wound up coming down. Hate that it happened and we’ll just go on and keep at it. You can’t talk to him. He’s 20.”

Drosselmeyer – Belmont Stakes Post Time Results
by Dank Kush on Jun.06, 2010, under Sports

Drosselmeyer finally got a shot in a Triple Crown race and it paid off with an upset in the $1 million Belmont Stakes.
Left out of the Kentucky Derby because he hadn’t earned enough money to qualify, Drosselmeyer staged a stirring stretch run and beat Fly Down by three-quarters of a length Saturday in the final leg of the Triple Crown.
With neither Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver nor Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky in the field, the 1½-mile Belmont looked to be a matchup of classic runner-ups — Ice Box from the Derby vs. First Dude from the Preakness.
First Dude took the lead from the start, but couldn’t hold off Drosselmeyer in the stretch and finished third. Ice Box, the 9-5 favorite trained by Nick Zito, was never in contention and finished ninth in the 12-horse field. Fly Down, also trained by Zito, was the second choice at 5-1.
The victory not only reaffirmed Drosselmeyer’s talent after failing to win in his past three starts, it also produced a few firsts for a pair of Hall of Famers.

Push To Pass Indy 500 Dario Franchitti Wins
by Dank Kush on May.30, 2010, under Sports

INDIANAPOLIS – Dario Franchitti drove 199 nearly flawless laps, then survived the last one with a huge break from a spectacular crash to climb back on top of the open-wheel world Sunday with his second win at the Indianapolis 500.
Two years removed from his failed try in NASCAR, Franchitti held on with a scant tenth of a gallon of fuel left in the tank — a victory made possible by a crash that sent Mike Conway airborne on the final lap.
“Still running,” Franchitti told his crew over the radio as he crossed the finish line, while wreckers were moving out to scoop up debris from Conway’s accident with Ryan Hunter-Reay.
