Bruce Springsteen, Wilco Soar At Bonnaroo
by Dank Kush on Feb.01, 2011, under Rap News
Bruce Springsteen on Saturday night found himself in a position he probably can’t remember last being in: having to preach to the not necessarily converted.
Springsteen and the E Street Band’s headlining slot at Bonnaroo was only the band’s second-ever festival date – the first being Pinkpop in Holland just weeks ago – and instead of proving it all night to a sea of older faces comfortable reporting back every syllable of every song, Springsteen arrived to a crowd that needed some background. “The mighty E Street Band is here tonight and we’re going to do everything we can to bring down the power of the music on you,” he preached during “Working on a Dream,” and spent the remainder of his nearly three-hour, 28-song set doing absolutely that.

by Dank Kush on Jan.29, 2011, under Rap News
Clear Channel Radio and Front Line Management are creating artist personal experience (a.p.e.) radio, a stand-alone company that will allow musicians to produce their own online radio shows. The channels will run 24 hours a day and play songs chosen by the artist, interviews and commentary. The program will launch in July with the Eagles, Christina Aguilera and Weezer.
That’s a pretty cool idea, don’t ya think? Now you can see what’s their favorite selections of music.

Phil Spector Gets 19 Years For Murder
by Dank Kush on Jan.04, 2011, under Rap News
Legendary music producer, Phil Spector, was given a sentence of 19 years to life in prison on Friday for the murder of a Hollywood actress in 2003.
Spector, 69, who revolutionized pop music in the 1960′s with his layered “Wall of Sound” production technique, was convicted in April of second degree murder by a Los Angeles jury after a second trial. The first trial had ended as a deadlock in 2007.
Lana Clarkson, 40, a B-movie actress, died of a shot to the mouth, fired from Spector’s gun in the foyer of his mock castle home outside Los Angeles on February 3, 2003. The two had met hours earlier at a Hollywood nightclub.
The sentence means that Spector must spend at least 19 years in prison before being eligible for parole. If not paroled, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Now that sucks, doesn’t it? Imagine being 69 years old and spending about 20 years behind bars.
Susan Boyle Loses Britain’s Got Talent
by Dank Kush on Jan.03, 2011, under Rap News
Two months after giving the performance that turned her into an overnight celebrity, Susan Boyle lost the top prize on “Britain’s Got Talent,” a surprising conclusion to the 48 year old singer’s meteoric rise to fame since her audition in April. She lost to a dance group called Diversity. They won £100,000 (approximately $160,000) and the chance to perform in front of England’s Royal Family.
Susan Boyle’s videos have been viewed over 150 million times on Youtube, so although she didn’t win, she’s still a high figure in people’s hearts. Damn, 150 million times!

Dr. Dre’s Dr. Pepper Commercial
by Dank Kush on Dec.31, 2010, under Rap News
The Dr. Dre commercial will be first aired on June 1st, 2009. The L.A. based hip-hop producer appears in the last installment of an ad campaign entitled “Trust Me, I’m A Doctor,” and teases music from the long awaited album, Detox, currently slated for a late 2009 release on Aftermath/Interscope.
“Scientific tests prove when you drink Dr. Pepper slow, the 23 flavors taste even better. For me, slow always produces a hit,” Dr. Dre says in the commercial, before stepping behind a DJ booth, putting on a pair of his own signature “Beats” headphones and slowing down the sped-up techno song that’s playing by placing a can of Dr. Pepper over the record. The new track comes on, the party goes wild and Dre states “Slower is better – trust me, I’m a doctor.”
Dr. Dre’s last album “Dr. Dre 2001″ released in 1999 has sold over 7.23 million copies in the United States alone. Can you say success?
Jay-Z Going To Warner?
by Dank Kush on Dec.31, 2010, under Rap News
It seems that Jay-Z was “95%” done with a deal to distribute his Roc Nation label through Sony (Billboard reported) but now the New York Times is reporting that Jay Z might be striking a deal with Warner Music Group. A “well-placed industry source” told the paper that Jay-Z has been meeting with Lyor Cohen and Kevin Lies about the possibility of creating his own label. His new label would be called Carter Music Group.
“Jay knows Lyor and Kevin from back when they all worked together at Def Jam, and he obviously wants to work something out with his friends,” the insider said. “He wants to get the dream team back together. There have been a few whiffs of a reunion in the past, but only now – and very privately – is something finally starting to happen.” The source made sure to add “This is big in hip hop. These are three of the most powerful men in music, who might be working together, and there’s no question the success they’ll have as a team will be huge.”
Jay Z be getting lots of labels and distributions, but can you really blame the man? He only has around $300 Million Dollars. I mean who would be happy with that amount? It be interesting to see how this will turn out, and whether or not he does start a new label with some music moguls.

VH1 Hip Hop Honors 2010
by Dank Kush on Jun.08, 2010, under Rap News

This year’s annual VH1 Hip-Hop Honors awards show seems to be one of the most contentious to date, thanks to its focus on “Honoring the Dirty South.” On one hand, you’ve got major Southern artists like Scarface, who feels the show is just ghetto-izing his peers. (The Houston rapper, actually, is refusing to attend in protest.) On the other hand, you’ve got artists like Miami’s own Luther Campbell, who is thankful for some recognition, but feels that VH1 is getting its history wrong.
Others, though, like Lil Jon, seem to just be grateful that the South is getting a shout-out on a program that’s formerly mostly focused on the now-defunct East Coast/West Coast division. And while Atlanta and New Orleans have gotten a lot of the Southern hip-hop shine, Miami’s got a pretty good showing of artists set to appear, and our city’s been featured in many of the program’s promotional spots.
