Alexander McQueen, Designer, Is Dead

by Dank Kush on Feb.11, 2010, under Rap News

Alexander McQueen, the British fashion designer known for some of the most controversial collections of the last two decades, was found dead Thursday morning at his apartment in London, said Ed Filipowski, a partner in the public relations firm KCD.

The cause was apparently suicide, though Mr. Filipowski said Mr. McQueen’s family had not yet made a statement.

Though he apprenticed on Savile Row, Mr. McQueen, who was 40, thumbed his nose at the conventions of English style by staging often lavish runway productions that included clothes made with animal bones, and models made to look as if they were patients in a mental ward or participants in a life-size chess match. Yet he was a tailor of the highest order, making impeccably shaped suits that were also surprisingly commercial.

But Mr. McQueen’s troubled personal life was often the subject of concern among his colleagues and close friends. He was deeply affected when Isabella Blow, the eccentric stylist who discovered and championed the designer, committed suicide in 2007, and he was said to be devastated by the death of his mother on Feb. 2.

Gustavo Dudamel Conducts Great Music

by Dank Kush on Oct.06, 2009, under Rap News

“Dude’s On Fire!” Jack Black said about Gustavo Dudamel, the new music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, at a free concert for 18,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl Saturday to welcome the 28-year-old Venezuelan conductor.

Black was one of many celebrities who joined the five-hour “Bienvenido Gustavo!” fest to tout music education for kids, a new audience for classical music and multicultural musical offerings — all espoused by Dudamel, the most popular export of Venezuela’s famous public music school network “El Sistema.” Music legends like Quincy Jones, Sergio Mendes, Herbie Hancock, Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), actor Andy Garcia and composer John Williams also turned out for a night of music under the stars.

Even U.S. President Barack Obama got in on the act — not in person, but he did send a letter Saturday to the Los Angeles Philharmonic saying “music is the universal language which builds intercultural relationships” and he “hopes the L.A. Phil inspires others to study the arts.”

One of the highlights of the night came from a hundred kids from underprivileged South L.A.  in the new El Sistema-inspired Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, who made their Hollywood Bowl debut with Dudamel conducting Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” Their families sat in the front, in what is known as the pool circle — the most coveted seats in the Bowl. VIPs and the city’s cultural elite sat behind them, sipping wine and picnicking.

Then, dressed in a cream colored Armani dinner jacket, Dudamel and his Los Angeles Philharmonic delivered the show’s powerful final act — Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, complete with a huge chorus and four vocal soloists. Los Angeles Times music critic Mark Swed called it “a Beethoven Ninth to be remembered.”

Two big screens on either side of the stage gave view to Dudamel’s expressions, his graceful motions and his hair — the hair being very important part of the movement as his black ringlets fly to and fro.  Even jaded critics enjoy watching Dudamel perform the lovely music.

After a standing ovation, Dudamel returned to the stage and spoke in both Spanish and English about America being one continent — no South, no North, no Central America. He flashed his boyish grin and said he had a surprise. The Philharmonic played the last minutes of the symphony again, this time to an eruption of fireworks. No doubt thousands of first-time concertgoers joined the ranks of classical music lovers — that’s saying something in L.A..  And this is too: Dude was on fire!

Bruce Springsteen, Wilco Soar At Bonnaroo

by Dank Kush on Jun.14, 2009, under Rap News

bruce-springsteen-picBruce Springsteen on Saturday night found himself in a position he probably can’t remember last being in: having to preach to the not necessarily converted.

Springsteen and the E Street Band’s headlining slot at Bonnaroo was only the band’s second-ever festival date - the first being Pinkpop in Holland just weeks ago - and instead of proving it all night to a sea of older faces comfortable reporting back every syllable of every song, Springsteen arrived to a crowd that needed some background. “The mighty E Street Band is here tonight and we’re going to do everything we can to bring down the power of the music on you,” he preached during “Working on a Dream,” and spent the remainder of his nearly three-hour, 28-song set doing absolutely that.

by Dank Kush on Jun.12, 2009, under Rap News

the-eagles-picClear Channel Radio and Front Line Management are creating artist personal experience (a.p.e.) radio, a stand-alone company that will allow musicians to produce their own online radio shows. The channels will run 24 hours a day and play songs chosen by the artist, interviews and commentary. The program will launch in July with the Eagles, Christina Aguilera and Weezer.

That’s a pretty cool idea, don’t ya think? Now you can see what’s their favorite selections of music.

Eminem Gets Bruno’s Ass In His Face

by Dank Kush on Jun.02, 2009, under Rap News

Eminem gets Bruno’s (Sacha Baron Cohen) ass in his face at the MTV Movie Awards. He seemed to be pretty pissed because he left the awards about five minutes later. A lot of people say that Eminem was in on it, but I don’t think so. I mean who agrees to have an ass in his face in public?

Phil Spector Gets 19 Years For Murder

by Dank Kush on May.31, 2009, under Rap News

phil-spector-picLegendary music producer, Phil Spector, was given a sentence of 19 years to life in prison on Friday for the murder of a Hollywood actress in 2003.

Spector, 69, who revolutionized pop music in the 1960’s with his layered “Wall of Sound” production technique, was convicted in April of second degree murder by a Los Angeles jury after a second trial. The first trial had ended as a deadlock in 2007.

Lana Clarkson, 40, a B-movie actress, died of a shot to the mouth, fired from Spector’s gun in the foyer of his mock castle home outside Los Angeles on February 3, 2003. The two had met hours earlier at a Hollywood nightclub.
The sentence means that Spector must spend at least 19 years in prison before being eligible for parole. If not paroled, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Now that sucks, doesn’t it? Imagine being 69 years old and spending about 20 years behind bars.
